Or:
chmod +x j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586-rpm.bin
./j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586-rpm.bin

Then install the resulting package:
rpm -Uvh j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586.rpm

And, because the next question is always "How do I make the plugin 
work..."

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so\ 
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

This assumes mozilla 1.3 which requires the plugin compiled with gcc-3.2.
