since i'm now out of the woods, a few questions:

1) is all of this happening with a new install? that is, you
   haven't built *any* new kernels?

2) did you need to do a pcmcia-based install? that is, from, say,
a cd-rom hooked to a pcmcia card? or do you have an onboard
   ATAPI cd-rom?

3) in /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/,

   a) do you have a directory named "pcmcia"?

   b) do you have all the pcmcia modules in kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ ?

4) if you have the modules in 3b), what happens when you try

  # modprobe pcmcia_core
