While this answered the question, it's not the best advice:

On the machine you wish to contact remotely
chkconfig telnet off
chkconfig sshd  on
service xinetd restart

Now, one your client machine:

man ssh
ssh -l <your_username> <target_machine>

Telnet is an insecure protocol and should no longer be used except in exceptional circumstances.
