Dear all The problem 2 (eth0 failed) has now been solved by spending considerable time tweaking System Tools/Network Device Control settings. The main trick seemed to be to opt for a "static set IP addresses" in place of "automatic obtain IP address". The audio player xmms did not work; I had to track down a patch at gurulabs.com, but this fixed the problem right away. So now this laptop is very good shape. Thanks for the help Greg ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: re: Installing RH 8.0 on a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2003 17:16:12 +0200 From: Greg Goldstein <greggold@xxxxxxxxxx> To: psyche-list-admin@xxxxxxxxxx I have been trying to install RH 8.0 (and 7.2 and 7.1) on an Inspiron 2500. One problem has been solved. re: problem 1. The X-server always crashes when I try to start X after installation. I can run the laptop at runlevel 3, it seems normal. Solution: The problem was that the installation process finds the correct video card, but sets it to have 16MB of memory by default. When I re-installed RH8.0 and set it to 4MB everything worked fine. (I found this solution by searching the archive of //groups.yahoo.com/group/linux-dell-laptops) re problem 2. I found that "bringing up eth0" always gave the result "failed" . The network interface is i82557 using the kernel module eepro100, which is known to be compatible. I do not have a solution to this problem yet. Here is an extract from /var/log/messages: I attach the entire messages file - it is clear the network card is found and identified. Any suggestions on problem 2 will be much appreciated! Greg -- Psyche-list mailing list Psyche-list@xxxxxxxxxx https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list
