Hi, Has anyone had any success with the 3.5GB address space patch from Andrea Arcangeli on Red Hat 8.0 kernels? (2.4.18-27.8.0 to be precise). The patch (from kernel.org) won't apply directly as the Red Hat kernel is already patched multiple times - in fact one file changed in the patch (include/asm-i386/page_offset.h) doesn't even exist in the Red Hat kernel. I manually applied the patch changes (adding the page_offset bits at the correct place in include/asm-i386/page.h) and the kernel compiled OK, but then failed to load the initrd image and wouldn't boot. I used the relevant .config from the configs directory, and just changed the High Memory option to 4GB and the User Address Space Size (from the patch) to 3.5GB. No other options were changed. I can't see how the code changes from this patch could affect the loading of the initrd, but I'm open to suggestions...anybody? BTW, I'm very familiar with compiling kernels (both Red Hat and vanilla), using mkinitrd, grub etc etc and I can assure everyone I didn't miss any steps or make any mistakes - I've done this sort of thing hundreds of times over the past 6 or 7 years. The Kernel Panic message was Unable to find root fs on device - I put this down to the fact that there was no attempt to load the scsi drivers (which were built in to the initrd.img). I ran mkinitrd with -v to confirm they were in there, and even manually unpacked the image to double-check!
