My tool kit now has a 2 floppy "parted boot set". It was created from 
information on this list and/or google. It's been _very_ handy once or 
twice. And, I think it might do what you want.

Parted has many limitations on a mounted file system. So, the boot 
floppy's not really optional. IMHO.
