And when you say, "in a coma", you cannot telnet/shh in or
anything, to look around?
That would be real handy.

On occasion, I've had things hang, but VERY rarely just shutdown
xinitd and everything else.

Wait......are we talking about SAMBA locking up or FTP?
Two different things.

I once prototyped a PC/unix system on a Linux box to show
management it wasn't necessary to spend thousands on SUN boxes
to do simple tasks, that could be done for free on an old 
Intel box.
They absolutely LOVED it.  So they went out and bought SCO Unix.........
