OK,

Thanks to the different suggestions from everybody I have managed to narrow the problem down.

It appears that the culprit seems to be my .Xclients file but I don't know why. Here's the situation.

When I move out my personnal .Xclients file from my home directory, X loads perfectly and I find myself in the default RH X environment. So the problem is not with XFree.

It comes from the .Xclients. I had modified that file some time ago to load IceWM and some other programs. And it was working perfectly ! I am at a loss to find what has caused the change in behaviour.

The content of my .Xclients file is the following:

=====================================================
# run profile to set $PATH and other env vars correctly
. $HOME/.bash_profile

# setup background
#xsetroot -solid '#056'

# setup mouse acceleration
#xset m 3 1 # run initial programs
/usr/local/bin/chbg -scenario /home/Cedric/chbg/Cedric1 &
/home/Cedric/bin/sigalea.sh &
gnome-panel &

#Allumer clavier numerique

if [ -x /usr/bin/X11/numlockx ]; then
	/usr/bin/X11/numlockx on
fi

# start icewm, and run xterm if it crashes (just to be safe)
exec icewm || exec xterm -fg red

==================================================================

This was perfectly working before and I have not changed it recently. The only file I changed recently is the bash_profile but I doubt this could be the reason.

I have also cleaned up the /var/tmp and /tmp directories.

Any ideas why my Xclients file could be doing this ?

Thanks in advance,

...or simply move them, while logged in as yourself from a console,
then
restart.

Also, go to /var/log/ and blow away your old tmp files. You may have
a
stray lock laying around.
