sendmail *must* be able to resolve its own hostname to a local IP
address.

So in /etc/hosts do the following:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain	localhost hostname.domain.net hostname

That is, force resolution of the fqdn to 127.0.0.1

Otherwise, what does it say in /var/log/maillog ?
