On Red Hat Linux 8.0, try again with

  export LC_ALL=C
  time zgrep pattern1 any.txt | grep pattern2

Just curious...

Your mail headers don't contain any reference to a thread of other
mails. Sorting by subject finds a message with the same subject, but
display problems. I don't see a relationship between those two
messages.
