Hello psyche-list,

Since setting up our home directories to be shared across systems
using NFS and automount, I have noticed something a bit odd. I have
configured systems to automatically start a VNC session for me.
Naturally, this requires that my home directory be NFS mounted onto
the various machines.

Ordinarily, this does not appear to be a problem. However, when one of
these machines is shut down, there is a series of messages at the
console (and messages log) that appear related to difficulty with
unmounting my home directory. Here is an example from a recent
shutdown, with my comments within curly braces {}:

{I trimmed the log up to the point at which my VNC server was shut
down, as follows.}
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 vncserver: Shutting down VNC server:
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 vncserver: 9:heiby
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 su(pam_unix)[16169]: session opened for user heiby by (uid=0)
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 su: Killing Xvnc process ID 1016
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 su(pam_unix)[16169]: session closed for user heiby
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 vncserver: vncserver shutdown succeeded
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 vncserver: ^[[60G
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 vncserver:
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 rc: Stopping vncserver: succeeded
{As far as I can tell, the VNC session shut down OK.}
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 xinetd[747]: Exiting...
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 xinetd: xinetd shutdown succeeded
Mar 7 14:08:29 cloud9 crond: crond shutdown succeeded
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 autofs: automount -USR2 succeeded
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 automount[698]: shutting down, path = /misc
{The above looks like the successful shutdown of my /misc automount
map, which probably did not have anything currently mounted. Now, it
moves on to /home.}
Mar  7 14:08:29 cloud9 autofs: automount -USR2 succeeded
Mar  7 14:08:36 cloud9 last message repeated 7 times
{Seems odd that it tried so many times.}
Mar  7 14:08:38 cloud9 ntpd:  succeeded
Mar 7 14:08:38 cloud9 ntpd: ntpd shutdown succeeded
{Now, the really weird stuff. It looks like it is complaining about
having a problem because /home/heiby is both busy and not mounted.}
Mar 7 14:08:38 cloud9 umount: umount2: Device or resource busy
Mar  7 14:08:38 cloud9 umount: umount: /home/heiby: not mounted
Mar 7 14:08:38 cloud9 netfs: Unmounting NFS filesystems: failed
Mar 7 14:08:45 cloud9 netfs: Unmounting NFS filesystems (retry): succeeded
Mar 7 14:08:46 cloud9 gconfd (strategis-15811): GConf server is not in use, shutting down.
Mar  7 14:08:46 cloud9 gconfd (strategis-15811): Exiting
Mar 7 14:08:52 cloud9 netfs: Unmounting NFS filesystems (retry): succeeded

Could anyone point me in the right direction to fix this? Thanks!

Ron.
