Firewire help needed

Can anyone point me to some documentation to get my system to accept a
firewire drive?  I have done the install, the system saw the
firewire drive and let me partition it but upon reboot, it fails. 
Is there something I need to do in the kernel to enable the boot up
sequence to recognize the firewire drive?

Any help would be most appreciated.
