Erase them with option --allmatches, e.g.:

  rpm --erase --allmatches cvs

And if that would break dependencies, you need to add --nodeps
and re-install the package once.

As a work-around for those hangs, make sure you don't interrupt
RPM too often in inpatience.

  killall rpm
  rm /var/lib/rpm/__*
  rpm --rebuilddb

should fix it for a while.
