Hello list, How do I re-direct std error "2" when gdm (or kdm, whatever) is handling the login? My concern is about error messages that appear in an active TTY when a client session is starting in X. Typically, I boot at init level 5, then login as a user with gdm handling the initial gui interface. Because KDE takes about a minute to start up (533MHz machine), I will use that time to jump over to TTY1 (ctrl+alt+F1) and login as root for whatever. Almost immed. after the TTY login I get a screen full of messages about cdrom unavailable , scsi this, etc (see example below). I say "active TTY" because going to TTY2 instead doesn't change the behavoir. It appears to grab whatever terminal is active. If I boot up at init level 3, running $ startx > ~/StartX-LOG 2>&1 captures all such messages in a file. Not only do they not interrupt a text terminal session, but they are available for analysis later, being stored in a file. Here's an example of messages that show up: [root@localhost root]# Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 usb-uhci.c: interrupt, status 3, frame# 1442 sda : READ CAPACITY failed. sda : status = 1, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 08 Current sd00:00: sense key Not Ready Additional sense indicates Medium not present sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB. I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0 unable to read partition table sda : READ CAPACITY failed. sda : status = 1, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 08 Current sd00:00: sense key Not Ready Additional sense indicates Medium not present sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB.
