It's for giving partitions names instead of having to use device
names. Check out "man e2label". In this case, you can also run
"mount -L /" to mount the root partition.

A label '/' is a bit unfortunate IMO. I prefer partition labels like
"boot", "root", "usr", "home", "data", "ftp", "www", and so on.
