2.4.20- the devil is in the details

Yes, to all of the questions below. To add salt to the wounded system, my son's box just compiled fine. I have noticed that the image file for the 2.4.20 kernel is half of all of the others in /boot.

Well, the devil is in the details, I guess; so youl will have to
humor me. ;-)

Did you do a "make mrproper" after you saved your .configure file?

Did you remember the underscore character in "make modules_install"?

Were you root for this process?

Did you remember to make a symbolic link so that /usr/src/linux
points to the right place?

What might help (if you'd be willing) is to list all the steps you
did and who you were when you did them. That might help me.
