I know that Alcatel's SpeedTouch, and Sagem's FAST 800 USB modems work. 
I also have heard that ECI has dual modems (Ethernet+USB) who cost no
more than USB modems of other brands: in ethernet mode they are trivial
to configure.  You will need a 10 Mb/s (around 10 $) Ethernet card on
your computer:
