I thought the left hand column in the peers output would give an indication of
the connection? If it is blank, does it not mean ntp is having a problem?

Actually, I do not want to act as a server, but rather just use external
servers to sync to an external server. Hence, maybe I am taking the wrong
approach??

Maybe I should shut down ntpd and just run ntpdate on a daily basis?
