I think Nautilus takes control of the background in psyche.  Open a
Nautilus window, Edit->Preferences->Desktop & Trash->Use Nautilus to
draw the desktop.

but that also removes Trash, Start-Here, Home and other links put on the desktop (until you turn it back on in nautilus)
