Thanks, while both these options will work I was after something more along the lines of what Red Hat do with IDE CDs, where DMA is off and running 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hdx' will still not turn DMA mode on, you need to do it as a kernel parameter. I want to ensure that no one can turn on DMA mode easily if they happen to see that it is off and think it would be a good idea to turn it on.
