xman display shows control characters

Hi all,

Certain pages in xman are not displaying correctly.
E.g., let's look at the page for "ls". Start xman,
click Manual Page - dropdown Sections - select User
Commands (1). Click on "ls". The first detail line
reads
  1mNAME0m

By comparison, in the old format "man ls" text screen
display this is NAME in bold. How to get xman to
interpret this correctly?

Other pages display correctly, for example the xman
help page.

AFAIK xman does it's own display; it's not relying on
a default pager. (I tried #export PAGER=less but made
no diff.)

Thanks in advance,

Johnny I.
