Gnome/remote X servers (gnome-terminal/memory leak)

Although I resolved this problem prior to hitting the send button, I thought
I would send this e-mail anyway for future searches on this list.

Steve Cowles

------------------

I use Xwin32 (on a W2K box) as my X server to manage a couple of RH8
systems. Both RH8 systems are configured to answer XDMCP
requests/broadcasts.

The problem I'm seeing is when I select GNOME (vs. KDE) at the graphical
login screen, applications like gnome-terminal start chewing up memory
resources at an astounding rate. Example:

[scowles@voyager news]$ ps aux | grep gnome-terminal
scowles 25516 3.4 7.4 21180 14196 pts/3 R 05:32 0:03
gnome-terminal
[scowles@voyager news]$ ps aux | grep gnome-terminal
scowles 25516 3.5 8.4 23088 16104 pts/3 R 05:32 0:03
gnome-terminal
[scowles@voyager news]$ ps aux | grep gnome-terminal
scowles 25516 3.7 9.5 25180 18196 pts/3 R 05:32 0:04
gnome-terminal

Note: Each ps was done in 1 second intervals. Within 3 seconds, the %MEM
field went from 7.4 to 9.5. In fact, if I leave gnome-terminal running long
enough, the %MEM will hit 60%+ along with my swap partition showing full
utilization (256MB). On the other side of the coin, if I select KDE at the
login prompt and use "konsole" as my terminal, I do not see this type of
memory leak. I can stay logged in for days.

Now for the really strange part -- If I boot my desktop PC into RH8 (instead
of W2K/Xwin32), I do not see this massive memory leak when I select GNOME.
Not even if I use gdmchooser (which is running on display :1/ctl-alt F8) and
display a remote gnome session back to my RH8 box. So it looks like this
memory leak is associated with the Xserver being displayed to.

Long pause...

Well after finding the proper search string (memory leak), I see this
problem has been logged into bugzilla (at least a dozen times!). The
solution to resolving the memory leak problem is outlined in the following
bugzilla report. Specifically, additional comment #16.

http://www.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=76219

At least this works for me. Although after installing Xft, scrolling within
a gnome-terminal is still very very slooow (like using VNC over a 56K dialup
line slow). But at least the bleeding has stopped.
