Jim, Thanks for the information! I tried adding the apm=power-off string to the end of the kernel line in /etc/grub.conf and it does not automatically power off after shutdown. I have some more information that may help... I am assuming that the apmd process should be running and it is not. I tried starting it with /etc/init.d/apmd start But I noticed no response to the start. I investigated further and I discovered that the /etc/init.d/apmd shell has the following lines: # If APM isn't supported by the kernel, try loading the module... [ -e /proc/apm ] || /sbin/modprobe apm &>/dev/null # Don't bother if /proc/apm still doesn't exist, kernel doesn't have # support for APM. [ -e /proc/apm ] || exit 0 I turns out /proc/apm does not exist, so apmd can't run. Does this mean that the RH8 kernel does not support APM? Does this mean that automatic power off will not work unless the kernel is either fixed or recompiled with the correct options? Hard to believe that this is missing in RH8, it works fine in RH7 and RH6 (although I am not running it on Dell), and I use lilo instead of grub.
