I have not tried that command (halt -p) but I have a similar issue on
one of our 4 boxes. Our Dell Dimension 4300, when I give it the shutdown order from X, shuts down completely, as it does it Win ME. This Dell Dimension XPS T500 also shuts down completely, as it does in Win 98 SE.

I won a Compaq D300v EVO box in September. It is a box that is apparently sold, primarily, to Enterprise clients and it has a much more sophisticated BIOS. The manual is in Spanish, so I haven't tried to resolve the issue yet, but I believe it has to do with some Power Setting(s) in the BIOS. The Compaq shuts down completely in MS Win 98 SE, but not in Psyche. It goes to a point where I need to push the Power Switch myself, to kill the power. Our oldest box (Dell Dimension XPS M233s) also does that, but it has obsolete technology and does not power off automatically in MS Win 98 SE either.

My gut feeling is this has something to do with Power Settings in the BIOS.

Please post back if you resolve this, with the solution!
