2 ways of assigning multiple IP addresses to 1 NIC

There are two ways of assigning multiple IP addresses to one NIC.

One method produces interfaces eth0:0, eth0:1 etc (for example).
One can see these interfaces with ifconfig.
You can easily create these additional interfaces with
redhat-config-network-druid by (re)using the same ethernet card.


The other method is to use 'ip addr ...'. Doing it this way,
ifconfig doesn't show anything other than eth0. You have to
run 'ip addr show' to see what's going on. Also, there is
no configuration tool which does it this way.


What is the difference between these two methods, and what
are their relative merits?
