whoa, somebody better clarify what they mean by a boot floppy.
the above "dd" command will create a bootable floppy that contains
nothing but a kernel.

the boot floppy that you can make from the images/ directory
on CD 1 has more than just a kernel.  if you want to see its
contents, grab a copy of the file "boot.img" from that
directory on CD 1, and copy it to, say, /tmp.

then, in /tmp, as root:

  # mkdir m
  # mount -o loop boot.img m
  # cd m

and look around.  much more than just a kernel.

  the confusion here is that different people mean different
things when they use the phrase "boot disk".
