Re: Weird hard drive boot message

I don't know how much my input will help, since I never had a real
solution to the problem, but I had an IBM 40GB drive that did the same
thing. Originally, I had it installed in my main workstation, but I
started seeing these errors until finally it wouldn't boot anymore.
Unfortunately, it ate all the info on the drive and the only way to
recover was to zero it out with IBM's utilitiy diskette. I stuck it in
another machine to see if it would die again, where it ran for a few more
months before popping up the same errors. I was in the process of
moving, so I didn't have time to worry about it. When the move was complete,
I booted up the machine, and had the same problem as before. This time,
however, the drive couldn't even be helped by the IBM utility disk: Their
software diagnosed it as a S.M.A.R.T. controller failure.

I've never seen this on any of my other machines, and another drive is
working fine in the system as we speak... could it be that it's indicative
of a hardware failure, as in my case?
