I ended up copying all the files from  /var/lib/rpm.rpmsave to /var/lib/rpm 
and recompiled rpm from scratch, and found that it now reads the database 
correctly.

On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section, it 
said 
'Requires Windows 95 or better'. So I installed Linux and lived happily 
ever 
after.
