That was temporary unavailability of the DNS system, either your own
or your provider's nameserver.

You were root, but not _logged in_ as root. Don't change to root
with just "su". Login as root with "su --login root", "su -l root"
or "su -". The additional argument is important, so you inherit the
superuser's $PATH environment variable.
