I like to make my fonts globally available so...

# mkdir /usr/share/fonts/ttf
# chkfontpath -a /usr/share/fonts/ttf
# cd /usr/share/fonts/ttf
# ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
# mkfontdir
# reboot

If you need to add more fonts, you do not mkdir or chkfontpath
I have found I need to reboot to make them work in The GIMP. Why?
I have no idea but that is what I do.
Thanks for the reply. It worked. By the time I tried it, I also saw Jesse Keating's comment about restarting xfs. I did that rather than reboot, and then the KDE menu had no entries. I did a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X, and the menu reappeared and Gimp had the new fonts.
