-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello psyche-list, After much fiddling around, I have pretty much got my main server, running RH 8.0, set up to provide DHCP service for my LAN. (BTW, the LAN is not currently connected to the Internet.) In the process, I have it pretty well set up to have the DHCP lease activity update the DNS configuration for the LAN. When a Windows PC comes up, it gets an IP address and its name becomes known via DNS. The one sever running DHCP service and DNS is the only such server on the network, although there is an NT Server doing some kind of NT-ish "domain" stuff. The fly in the ointment that currently has my attention is another RH 8.0 system sitting in my lab. It knows what its name is. It knows what its IP address is. It got its IP address from the first system. The first system shows that it granted a lease for that IP address, and the HW address in the lease matches the HW address of the second machine. So far, so good. However, there does not appear to be anything to tie the second machine's *name* to the IP address grant, so the name does not show up in the server's DNS, so the name is not findable via DNS query. Additional weird part: From my Win2K system, I can ping that second host by its simple name (dev2). However, when I try to ping it via its FQDN (dev2.off.mydomain.com), no joy. Using ws_ping to look up dev2's DNS record using "dev2" using a DNS Server os "(stack)", I get its IP address. Same request with the FQDN, I get "Failed to resolve name". When I repeat the experiment and specify my main server as the DNS Server, for the FQDN, I get a bunch of verbiage that indicates that there is no such host; for just "dev2", it sits there a while and times out. Any ideas on how I can get "dev2" to get its DHCP lease information propagated into my DNS server, as the Windows systems do? Thanks! Ron. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP Personal Privacy 6.5.8 Comment: Until recently, the last PGP with full source disclosure. iQA/AwUBPe/ua28pw+2/9pUJEQKRiACff6Kf5XaaxcfDVQhl+u32RGCMLXIAoMVk RZqyB1R+G4HtMG0bgZ+e5gJd =PXYv -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- Psyche-list mailing list Psyche-list@redhat.com https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/psyche-list
