Thanks for the advice. I tried deleting a user and adding it again but it came back with the same problem. Same named user you see. I just reinstalled as not being able to launch anything was a major pain in the butt. I'll keep your advice about starting terminals etc
Once again , Thanks

I've just installed RH8.0. I placed the menu bar at the bottom of the
screen to the side and now I have get the following error message.
Application "gnome-panel" (process 1078) has crashed due to a fatal error.
(Aborted)
Any pointers on How I can get a patch or more info on this?

The bug is known:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=75138

Always do a quick search on bugzilla when possible (though you may find that hard without a panel to launch apps :-)

From the bugz web page:
Someone suggested mentioning how to recover from this:
Go to a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) or ssh in to the machine,
move ~/.gconf/apps/panel to ~/.old-panel-config or something, and then reconfigure the panel (not putting the tray applet on the vertical panel)

Note that, even though the panel is dead, you can always get to a shell in
gnome by right-clicking on the desktop background and launching a
gnome-terminal from the menu.

cheers,
