I have that drive and it plays audio CDs just fine (and I haven't yet
come across a CD-R/RW that it won't read).

In dmesg, my drive is identified as follows:

scsi3 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
  Vendor: PLEXTOR   Model: CD-R   PX-W4012A  Rev: 1.02

Like Klaasjan Brand replied, it's more likely to be a drive problem than
an OS problem.
Check cabling/jumpers, clean the lens, see if there's a firmware update
available, or take it back to the store if nothing helps.
