We've noticed here at the office that the more fine-tuning we are doing on
the kernel (and 2.4.18-18 ranks in there) the more the nVidia drivers
aren't working as they advertise.  This is mostly due to the way the
drivers poke around in the kernel where they shouldn't be, as opposed to
using the published specs for kernel interaction.  So, it doesn't surprise
me at all that you are seeing problems.
