The final mail server in a chain of relays usually would answer with an error like "no such user" or "unknown user" or something similar and would reject the incoming message. If the mail account existed and if the sender connected directly to the recipient's mail server, he would first get something like "message accepted for delivery" and later the manually created mailer-daemon message. Surely that would work with a human-being getting and reading that mailer-daemon message. However, I have doubts that it would work with spammers, since they don't evaluate mailer-daemon replies (if they did, they would use valid e-mail addresses). And even if an address collector would erase a bouncing address from his commercial list, that would not remove your address from the many other source (e.g. the web or mailing-list archives) and other bulk e-mail lists which are sold or used/maintained by bulk e-mail service providers. The only way to fight SPAM/UCE is to block it on its way into the mail transport system as early as possible. - -- I hate SPAM from Taiwan, Korea, and China.
