I know that it works at least for some people. I added support for the ATI Radeon Mobility FireGL 7800, which is reported by many people to work in 2D and 3D currently. It's a nice fast laptop chip too. Other than that, all I can suggest is querying bugzilla for both open and closed XFree86 bug reports containing the workds "Radeon Mobility".
