Ah, the joys of compiling KDE...

Usually, you have to specify a --prefix, and the app will _only_ look in that 
prefix for a lib dir for libraries.  KDE is wonderfully stupid this way.  I'd 
say try to create an entire lib set necessary for KDE in /usr/local, so make 
heavy use of --prefix=/usr/local or whatnot.
