Try reinstalling Xine. If you compiled Xine from source, and did not have 
divx4linux installed at the time when you ran ./configure;make;make install, 
xine won't be able to play divx movies even if you install divx later. 
If you decide to recompile from the same source-tree you used the first time,
make sure you do:

> make clean
> rm config.cache

By the way, the output from ./configure should tell you if the divx 
installation was successfull.
