Run rhn_register as root
Did so and was told by Bash that the command was not found.
Run "up2date --register".

This brings up the update x-window. Tried to log in and was told that
my account and password was already claimed ... duh. I had entered it
on a previous visit.

I am trying to log in to run the recommended security update.

Is it possible the RH server is just overwhelmed and is shipping out
bogus error messages?

that indicates that you are already registered, so now just run

up2date

and click on the buttons in the GUI dialog that appears.
