ok.  i did a silly thing.

i have 2 hard drives and i am trying to move the hdd drive (containing redhat) to my primary controller and the hda drive (containing M$) to the secondary controller.  (the secondary controller has a ide cdrom on it and i thought i might be able to improve performance by changing the controllers)

i changed the grub.conf and fstab files, but on reboot i never get the grub loader.  is it something to do with my mbr record?

my grub.conf file looks like this:

default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14)
          root (hd0,0)
          kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
          initrd /initrd-2.4.18-14.img
title Windows 2000
          rootnoverify (hd1,0)
          chainloader +1

the fstab is:

LABEL=/               /           ext3        defaults          1  1
LABEL=/boot         /boot     ext3        defaults          1  2
none                     /dev/pts devpts     gid=5,mode=620  0 0
none                     /proc      proc        defaults           0 0
none                     /dev/shm  tmpfs    defaults           0 0
/dev/hda2              swap      swap       defaults           0 0
/dev/fd0                 /mnt/floppy  auto    noauto,owner,kudzu  0 0
/dev/cdrom            /mnt/cdrom  iso9660  noauto,owner,kudzu,ro  0 0
