This connection problem with POP3 does not appear to be on your client
end.  I get the same error when trying from here:

[ryan@vanessa]:[~]$ telnet mail.carbinworld.com pop3
Trying 66.84.10.254...
Connected to mail.carbinworld.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK Qpopper (version 4.0.4, modified by Sphera Technologies) ready.
USER steve
-ERR Syntax error.
Connection closed by foreign host.

You need to find out why the POP3 server "Qpopper" won't accept the USER
command as it should.
