Possibly related to this bug: 
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=76269

ppmtolss16 is a perl script.  Can you try this on both machines:

1.  Get the syslinux-splash.png image from disc 1.
2.  Run `pngtopnm syslinux-splash.png | ppmtolss16 > temp.lss16`

and see if you get an error.
