I rpm the abovementioned 3 packages and it works.  Now OpenOffice can be 
started either as 'root' or as 'user'

One thing I could not resolve.  I have played around with the tarball 
downloaded from OpenOffice.org website.  It doesn't work for RH8.0.  It 
worked perfect on RH7.3  I tried several time with the same 
result.  Installation and setup went through without complaint but 
OpenOffice could not start.

Anyway lot of thanks for your advice.
