Are you by any chance running X w/ screensavers enabled? I had a problem w/ my 8.0 installation crashing hard - total freeze, nothing in the logs (that I saw, anyway), etc. The machine was largely idle also, and it was a Dell (albeit a desktop model), though I'm sure some of the hardware is the same. Anyhoo, the crash only happened while the screensaver was running. For me, the problem went away once I recompiled my kernel, though to tell you the truth, I don't know the difference(s) between the stock 8.0 kernel and the one that I built.
