I am using CUPS also. I even tried cat fn.ps > /dev/lp0 and nothing comes 
out.

I'm actually more concerned about the fact that gv/ghostview says 

Error: PostScript interpreter failed in main window.

In the meantime I found a pain-in-the-ass workaround. For some reason 
ps2pdf works even though ghostscript fails. From there, xpdf can convert 
it back to PostScript which does both view and print.

It sucks to be me. :-(
