I was able to get it to stick for my DVD drive (I
checked by rebooting and dma was still set) by doing
both of the suggestions mentioned previously:

1.  I created a file /etc/sysconfig/harddiskhdc which
contained the single line USE_DMA=1

2.  I edited /etc/modules.conf and added the line: 
options ide-cd dma=1

This seems to have worked for me.
