I think the problem is in htdig. I haven't been able to get it to work 
on a local document search index.
In the past I have used htdig to create a search index for 
/usr/share/doc then I have a link to doc in apache "document root". It 
was a handy reference tool. Anyway, it worked fine on all the 7.x 
releases so maybe downgrading to an older version of htdig would fix it 
- I did everything I could imagine to the config files before I gave up 
on it with this version of htdig.
