I was able to get this to work using Xinerama. See this message on
the linux-thinkpad mailing list:

Near as I can tell, for whatever reason, the radeon/ati driver cannot
establish suitable display parameters on the T30 with dsub only in X 4.3
(but I think it worked in 4.2).
