A hacky way with earlier versions of gnome is to start, say, xterm
on another display which executes gnome-session.  Something like
that

  xterm -display :0.1 -iconic -e 'gnome-session <possible options' &

It does not have to be xterm. :-)

I did something of that kind in the past when experimenting with
a dual head Matrox card and it worked.  You run that manually or
in your session startup.
