Since 16 bit color seems to cause the problem, but 8 is alright, what about using the
15 bit color allowed in Redhat 8.0 and see if this helps.

        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     15
                Modes    "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection

The above is what I am using now, but not because of stability, but to try and squeeze as
much performance out of my ATI Rage card.

I would like to add a "me too" to the problem reported by Manoj Kumar.  I am using the same Sis6326 AGP display controller with 4 MB of video RAM.  In my case I did a new install of Redhat 8.0.  I used the textual interface to do the install and after I brought up graphical mode the system would run for various lengths of time before the screen froze along with the keyboard and mouse. <ctl> <alt> <f1> and <ctl> <alt> <bs> key combinations had no effect.

I also attempted an install using the graphical interface and found that I could not get through the install before the screen would freeze.

I decided to do and install of Redhat 7.3 to see if that did any better and found that after I started X and before it was fully active the screen would freeze.  After seeing the note from Manoj I changed all references to depth in the files XF86Config and XF86Config-4 from 16 to 8 while in text mode.  When I started X it came up and appears to function without a problem.  Note that the configuration files for Redhat 8.0 and Redhat 7.3 are different in that there is no XF86Config-4 file on the Redhat 8.0 system.

I too would be interested in any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.  Unfortunately I also have now way to provide ftp access to my configuration file or XFree86 log file.
